I have this mushroom which was hiding behinds rocks and a few months ago i found it and its now stuck to a rock, it now seems to get bigger every day, when i feed my fish it closes up, also my female clown fish has started to sit in it or host so im a bit worryed that it will get a tast for fish, its about 10-13cm across.

Looks like it could be a ricordia sp mate.

I have one that goes like that from time to time and then perks back up mate.

If it's been behind rocks it may be a little bit fed up lol

looks like a Rhodactis sp., these aren't fish eaters, but aprantly can take very small inverts.

It looks like an elephant ear mushroom to me. They have different variations of pimples and colours but can grow large. If it closes itself up when you feed it is a sign that it could be.

My rhodactis curls up like a ball when its feeding, but not when the clown is on it...

Ilovenemo
17-04-2009, 22:10
why would anyone want a coral that eats fish anyway? I mean even if you took it back to the lfs would they just sell it to some unsuspecting punter?

Bill19
17-04-2009, 22:15

Bill19
18-04-2009, 15:50
mm.... this is a pic of Rhodactis indosinensis, or hairy mushroom, showing that it curls up as well... how ever liveaquaria and google search doesn't say anything about eating fish, so it may be ok yet:
http://i247.photobucket.com/albums/gg131/wildbill19_photo/tony3051_rhodactis2-1.jpg

P.S. not all hair mushys are as hairy as that one

Pete
18-04-2009, 15:52
i have some of them mushrooms but there alot smaller than this "beast"

Bill19
18-04-2009, 15:55
how big is this one? mm.... put a lance fish ,same size as your smallest clownfish, in it and see if it eats it, if yes, get it the hell out of there, if no then you may be OK :D

Pete

Pete

Pete,

I would have to agree that it looks incredibly like a rhodactis, theres one on google images that looks incrdibly similar (shown my knowledge now!), but seeing your latest pictures made me think, could it be a type of anemone?

My Clown Fish love getting in amongst my Actinia equina, and that's what your picture looks like. A carpet Anemone can carry the same sort of markings and texture as your mystery beasty, but I can't find anything that colour. I'm probably well off the mark, but thought I'd put my random ideas into the mix!

It was the carnivorous bit that made me think that too!

im 99% sure its not an Anemone it is a type of mushroom not to sure what type but it seems quite happy and its not eaten any fishys yet, so i think i will keep it, thanks for your help case closed :D

Pete,

Sorry to re-open the case, but I have been doing some reading since my post yesterday and have found instances of "Green Hairy Mushrooms" or Rhodactis, actually eating fish. Aparently in the book "Borneman's Corals" there is a photo of a green hairy mushroom, closed up like your photo with the fins of a Bangaii Cardinal sticking out of it. I've also found cases of Clowns hosting these corals and literally having it close up around them and in some cases completely devour them. So based on this I would suggest you get rid, or better than that, frag it so it's too small to kill fish!!!

It's a really good looking mushroom, and I would have one, but if it can potentially kill fish, it can't be good!

Also, it is apparently suggested in "Borneman's Corals" that they may secrete some kind of chemical that could stun the fish and this is how such a slow moving coral can kill the fish and close up around it.

Sorry for the bad news and the reopening of the case.

Dan

Taking into account that it was a freebie, I would actually get rid too if I was you mate. It's just not worth the risk.

I can't make it out clearly from the photo. Google image searches on Rhodactis inchoata and let me know if it's that... looks like it could be.
There's a number of Rhodactis that have a very sticky glue like excretion which is how they capture fish... It pretty much sticks them to it.

my dad in law has loads of these all over his tank and they have never eaten a fish, my clown hosts in mine in the day, then it closes up when the lights go out so she wedges herself by my galaxia! i could be wrong, but the only mushy kind of thing i have heard ''eat'' fish are elephants ears...
